Mexico City is one of the great capital cities in the world. It is Mexico’s largest city as well as its political, financial and cultural capital. It has a population of over 8.8 million people. The city was originally built on an island in Lake Texcoco by the Aztecs. This city was, however, almost completely wiped out and rebuilt according to Spanish standards by Spain’s conquistadors. Though present day Mexico City has a reputation for being polluted and dangerous, it is an exciting city to explore, full of museums, parks, old architecture, interesting neighborhoods and nearby archaeological sites.
