China is full of interesting places to travel to. Just put your finger down on a map of this country and you’re sure to find something worth traveling there for. China has it all: high mountains, massive deserts, forests, plains, rainforests, huge cities, and thousands of miles of coastline. This country is one of the most diverse in the world.

Enough has been written about the Great Wall, Yangtze River Cruises, the Shanghai Bund, the Terracotta Warriors and their ilk of tourist sites. In my opinion these are the places where you can experience China at its worst, and I only recommend visiting them in passing. This is also a vagabond travel guide, and adding more information about the major tourist sites of China to the ether would not only be redundant but misplaced here as well. This guide is for people out to experience China, not to be shuttled around like sheep to look at some reconstructed relics.

It is my impression that it’s best to travel China by region, and this is where I’d recommend going:

The East

The east of China is full of a few great cities, many not so great humongous cities, and ancient cities. But do not think that this stretch of the country is just one long urban monstrosity, as this is also the agriculture center of China as well. On top of that, the entire region is flanked by thousands of kilometers of coastline.

Apart from the area around Xi’an, this area was the cradle of Chinese civilization, and has contained the country’s administrative, economic, and cultural centers for millenia. This is no different today. The heartlands of China are still located in the east.
