San Cristobal de las Casas is a small town in Chiapas, southern Mexico. It is nestled in the mountains, giving it pleasant weather all year round. Below I have listed specific activities that families with children traveling to San Cristobal will enjoy. For a more comprehensive view check out the article on Travel with Children Tips.

Parque de Convivencia Infantil  Pereferico Norte in Barrio San Ramón. Entrance: 2 pesos

Parque de Convivencia Infantil is a large park with a huge playground for kids including slides, swings, and ramps for bikes. For ten pesos extra you can use one of a number of trampolines and large inflatable slides. There are snacks and cheap toys for sale. It is full of families on Sundays, but is mostly quiet the rest of the week.

Sante Caffe  Andador Miguel Hidalgo.  Cup of Coffee: 14 pesos

The Sante Caffe is a swanky little café with more expensive (but good) coffee and tea than other places but it has a nice playroom for kids, including a little playhouse, two slides, and mini exercise equipment. Some Sundays they even have a staff person to supervise and play with the kids. Unlike some places, it is usually fairly quiet, with only a few children playing at one time.  It’s a really nice place for mom and dad to drink a cup of coffee and have a full conversation while their little one can play.

Grutas de Rancho Nuevo  10 km outside of San Cristobal toward Teopisca. Entrance: 10 pesos

These caves are located just outside San Cristobal. There is a passageway to explore the stalactite and stalagmite formations.  There are also trails in the surrounding area and a picnic area. You can also go on horseback rides for about $1 for 15 minutes or $5 for an hour.

Parque Ecologico Arcotete 6 km outside of San Cristobal  off of road to Tenejapa.  Entrance 10 pesos.

This park located just outside San Cristobal has some trails through the woods, small caves and a nice spot to picnic by the river.

Zocalo and Plaza in front of Cathedral

The zocalo is the main square in the center of town. There is often marimba music on the weekends and it is not unusual to have some other cultural activity including free music, art expositions and local craft markets.  It is also just a nice area for kids to run around and feed or chase the pigeons.

Walking on the Andadores

The main streets of San Cristobal are pedestrian only, making them nice places to walk around with your kids. This is also a place where you will run into other families with kids if you are looking for some friends.

The Museo de Bichos e Insectos (Insect Museum) is located on calle 16 de Septiembre #23. The entrance fee is 25 pesos and you get a short talk by a local etymologist, a chance to browse two rooms of specimens and a chance to hold a tarantula and a Madagascar cockroach. Great for little naturalists and budding etymologists.
