This isn’t a vacation trend, it’s a lifestyle shift.

Over the past few years, more and more Americans have been packing their bags and heading for Portugal. This isn’t a vacation trend, it’s a lifestyle shift.
What’s Driving the Move?
A combination of reasons:
- Lower cost of living
- Safety and stability
Portugal consistently ranks among the top 10 safest countries in the world, offering a calmer environment than many are used to. - Quality of life
Think: mild weather, ocean air, long lunches, low crime, and a culture that doesn’t glorify overwork. - Friendly visa options
Remote workers and retirees can apply for long-term visas like the D7 and digital nomad visas, opening the door to a slower, more affordable life abroad.
So, How Many Are Moving?
Roughly 9,800 to 14,000 Americans now live in Portugal — more than double the number just five years ago. Residency applications are up nearly 40% since 2022, and many of those new arrivals are settling in the Algarve.
Why the Algarve?
With its welcoming expat communities, the Algarve — Portugal’s southern coastal region — is attracting growing numbers of Americans.
From a lifestyle and investment perspective, Algarve property remains more affordable than comparable destinations in Spain or southern France, while offering just as much charm.
- Lagos is a consistent favorite, known for its coastal vibe, walkability, and blend of modern and historic appeal. It possesses everything someone would need; a lively marina, culture-rich old town, great beaches and quieter spots set into hills.
- Tavira, on the eastern Algarve, is quieter and more traditional — a riverside town with Moorish architecture, beautiful beaches, and less tourist traffic.
For buyers seeking character and a slower pace, there are plenty of houses for sale in Tavira that still offer great value.
In Short
Portugal offers more than a place to retire or escape. And for many Americans, especially those feeling priced out or burned out, that’s exactly what they’re looking for.
