What European countries are in the Schengen Zone?

The following 26 European countries are in the Schengen Zone (updated: February 2012):

Austria

Belgium
Czech Republic
Denmark (excluding Greenland and Faroe Islands)
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Italy
Latvia
Liechtenstein
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland

Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus are also a part of the agreement but have yet to implement all of the aspects of the treaty.

To answer your question, Romania is a part of the Schengen Zone but it has not yet opened its borders to the region. This means that a traveler will be stamped out of the Schengen Zone upon entering Romania and will be given a visa that is only for Romania. Time in Romania also does not currently count towards you Schengen totals for days spent inside the region.

Though Romania and Bulgaria will soon be full fledged members of the Schengen Zone soon, and the usual restrictions will apply.

Hello!!!

My friend and I are traveling in Europe right now for 5 months. We went to the German consulate in Canada and the said we needed to apply for a long term stay visa once we were halfway through out 90 days. But when we went to go apply for it (after 45 days) they told us the consulate gave us the wrong info. So we planned to go to Romania for some time (as well as others not in the schengen region) but as I was looking up information I came accross a French consulate page that said Romania IS part of the region. I’m wondering, do you know the countries that are for sure in the schengon region and which ones aren’t? We are also confused about Ireland. Some sources say it is part of schengen but some say it’s not.
