León, Nicaragua

I’m not a fan of Christmas. I haven’t been for years now. I’m no Scrooge but this holiday is completely over rated. In the U.S. I hated dealing with mobs of stressed out people in malls, ridiculous amounts of traffic, being bombarded with ads and, of course, the hokey holiday music.

This year I have found a welcome reprieve from the holiday. No stressed out shoppers, no malls, no ridiculous traffic, no commercials, no talk of ‘What should I get [fill in name]?’ or ‘Is heshe getting me a gift? Ugh, now I need to get them a gift too.’ and no stupid music. I ‘m also not dealing with sub-freezing temperatures, snow, ice and wind. Yes, everyday has blue skies and today’s high is 92º.

Still, Christmas has managed to be an annoyance this year in the past couple of days. I compare it more to a hurricane that your waiting to blow through. It’s two days before Christmas and I dare not travel anywhere. Buses are beginning to fill up with nationals and hotels are starting to raise their prices to ridiculous levels. To avoid all this I came to León two days ago and don’t plan on going anywhere for the next few days.

Another reason for not moving anywhere for the next couple of days besides Christmas is that I also smashed my knee against a 3ft concrete curb in San Salvador. I’m waiting for the swelling to subside and to once again have full range of motion before I go anywhere. Carrying around a backpack and riding in old school buses with seats not spaced adequately for anyone over 5’6” can be hard on the knees so I’m just going to wait this one out. I’m hoping that the end of Christmas and a functioning knee will coincide with one another.

I’m also not anxious to get back on another bus anytime soon. Before León I was in Los Cobanos, El Salvador and it wasn’t the quickest journey to get here. My trip involved two days of travel taking separate buses from Los Cobanos → Sonsonate → San Salvador Terminal Occidente → San Salvador Terminal Orriente → San Miguel → El Amatillo (border crossing into Honduras) → Choluteca → Somotillo (border crossing into Nicaragua) → Chinandega → León. I could have taken the international buses from San Salvador to Managua and then backtracked back to Leon but where’s the fun in that?

Wait a minute…I'm finally catching up on your blog! I have to disagree with you when you say your not a Scrooge. Do you remember your Christmas present from us last year?
