South Africa is a country located at the tip of the African continent. It is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland. Its eastern coast line is on the Indian Ocean, while its west borders the Atlantic. Its area is over 1,200,000 square kilometers. South Africa has nine provinces. Budget Travel Tips

South Africa is not the cheapest country to travel in. Even though there are many hostels, they can be a little expensive. Some national parks have cabins you can stay in for free or for a very small fee. Travel in the off season will save you money. South Africa has a well developed infrastructure. If traveling long distances, local, budget airlines might be just as cheap as buses. If you are traveling with friends, renting a car can be more economical than taking buses as well.  Food is generally cheap, especially if you avoid restaurants and eat at food stands and carts.

Recommended Destinations

Cape Town is a colorful metropolitan city. Located on the sea, it is full of museums and culture. The Indian Ocean coast in KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape has beautiful deserted beaches. There is plenty of wilderness including the Drakensberg Mountains for hiking.
