So many people think that Maryland is just a small wedge between D.C. and Pennsylvania and so they write it off as a place to take a weekend trip, or even a longer vacation, but you know what? They shouldn’t! Why? Because although it’s not as sweeping as Texas or as lively as New York, there is tons of personality packed into that little wedge of land that make it more than worth a visit. Don’t believe me? Read on.
Crab Cakes, Old Bay, and a Love Affair with Seafood
Okay, so if you’re going to visit Maryland, you are going to want to visit the Chesapeake Bay, which is the heart of the state, and if you’re going to do that, then you’re going to want to sample its legendary blue crabs. Proper Maryland crabs are truly a delight for the dedicated foodie, and taste even better when eaten at a newspaper-covered table with wooden pallets and more Old Bay than you have ever eaten before. Crack those shells and you’ll be in foodie heaven.
History that’s More than Textbook Boring
Maryland is dripping with history, but not the “yawn in the back of class” kind. Think about it: the Battle of Antietam, one of the most pivotal moments of the Civil War, happened here. Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” after watching bombs burst over Fort McHenry in Baltimore. You don’t just read about history in Maryland, you literally walk on it.
The Charm of Charm City
Speaking of Baltimore, let’s give it some love. This city has more layers than a crab dip (and yes, that’s a thing). If you’re Googling things to do in Baltimore, your list will overflow: explore the Inner Harbor, check out the National Aquarium, wander through quirky neighborhoods like Hampden, and yes, maybe even catch a Ravens game if purple jerseys are your vibe. Baltimore has grit, but it also has heart – kind of like Rocky Balboa with better seafood.
Small Towns with Big Character
Don’t make the mistake of thinking Maryland is only Baltimore when you travel there. Ever heard of St. Michaels? It’s a charming waterfront town where life moves at half speed and every shop seems to sell something nautical. Annapolis, the state capital, is basically America’s sailing headquarters, and its historic downtown looks like it was built specifically for Instagram. Head west, and suddenly you’re in the Appalachian Mountains, surrounded by hiking trails, waterfalls, and small towns that look ripped straight out of a postcard.
Mountains, Beaches, and Everything Between
Maryland is a geographic overachiever. In just a couple of hours, you can go from skiing in Deep Creek Lake to lounging on the sandy shores of Ocean City. Want to kayak through quiet marshes? Done. Prefer to hike through rugged mountain terrain? Easy. Craving a boardwalk funnel cake while the Atlantic roars in the background? Maryland’s got that too.
The Verdict
Maryland is proof that size isn’t everything. This pint-sized powerhouse packs in seafood feasts, serious history, quirky cities, and natural beauty that covers every mood you might have. Next time you’re mapping out a trip, don’t just skim over Maryland like it’s a layover state. Give it a chance, and it might just surprise you.
