Experience of teaching English in Mexico

I get paid 200 pesos per hour here in Mexico City. I only work 16 hours a week and after taxes make about 11,000 pesos a month. Not too shabby. Of course, they want a bit of a time commitment… well, at least you have to give them a month’s notice if you quit or most employers would withhold your salary (or even worse, call immigration, which can actually happen if you piss someone off and you wouldn’t want that to happen.)

In places like queretaro, morelia you’d be looking at about 90 pesos an hour. Guadalajara, maybe 120. I got offered a job once at a reputable school in San Cristobal (La Casa en el arbol) and I was shocked how low they offered me. Something like 5000 pesos a month for 30 hours or teaching.

English teaching jobs for experienced and qualified native speaking teachers are very common throughout Mexico. Generally, a four year university degree is needed along with TEFL certification, but these qualifications can be subverted in practice. Be warned that the pay scale for teaching English in Mexico varies greatly, some regions of the country pay over ten USD per hour while others only a few bucks. Expect to be paid vastly more in Mexico City than anywhere else in the country.

Teaching private lessons in San Cristobal de las Casas, I made 50 pesos an hour. This is the same rate a local language school told me they pay English teachers for private lessons.
