Travel tip #37

I was recently approached with another offer by a magazine to purchase some of my travel photos for publication. This time the offer came from Singapore Airline’s on flight magazine for their newest issue about Guatemala.

I quickly obliged the request for photos and send over two zip files full of Guatemala pictures.

Turn around speed is of the essence when dealing with magazines and newspapers, as their employees usually work on strict deadlines. So if I want to sell my travel photos, I must get them into the hands of the magazine as soon as they are requested.

This I did.

But at the time I snapped off the photos I did not take into account the fact that I may one day use them in a print publication and took many of them at the lowest resolution available.

I am not sure if these photos are large enough for the magazine to use, and I may have lost a few hundred dollars by attempting to be prudent with the space on my camera’s memory card.

Print magazines and newspapers need large resolution photos. You can always shrink a photo, but it is difficult to increase its size.

In point, I realized that I can never know what the future may hold for my travel photos. Although I only intended for my Guatemala photos to be for web publication on VagabondJourney.com, I have had two offers within the past month by magazines wanting to buy them. One sale I made to FHM Magazine, but I may have lost the Singapore Airlines deal because many of the photos had resolutions that were too small.

Travel tip: you never know what you may someday use your travel photos for, so take them at large resolutions.

If you intend to use your photos for any sort of media, it helps to have the original resolutions as large as possible.
