One entire night of driving is down, but I stand only 10 hours and 650 miles into a 46 hour haul across the USA.

This country is big, and this is never more evident than after you travel for a dozen hours straight at highway speed, and get, for all intensive purposes, nowhere.

I am outside of Albion, NY now at my family’s home. I am on a quick, heart break sort of visit — I will be here just long enough to say goodbye.

I pulled off into the driveway of my paternal home at 10AM after a night of intermittently sleeping in my car at rest stops through Massachusetts and New York. Now, after a good meal of pot roast, I am getting back on the road at 4Pm.

I want to hit St.Louis tomorrow to visit my best friend Erik the Pilot — another heartbreak visit.

As my little Chinese sister screams and cries because I am about to walk out the door as quickly as I strode through it, I understand that the traveling life is good, but other ways of life are good, too.

    Hey Wade,

I just drove across the US from Orange County CA to New Hampshire and back. In fact, my wife and I were going to my former Grandparent’s home, Whiting ME, but decided to pass this time. Ever hear of Whiting?

I’m telling you, it was a lot of driving.

Where you’re at now, the travelling is slow. But once you get on one of those big US highways, you can make up some distance. After this trip, both my wife and I will never complain that it takes a whole day to get from our home to NH in one day via an airplane.

BTW, I don’t think I’ve ever written before, but I really do like your blog. I’ve subscribed. Maine is a wonderful land and I love the pictures you draw through your writings.

      Hello Mike,

Yeah, man, it takes a while to get across this country!

It is good traveling though. Especially when you hit Indiana and realize that you have entered the heartland of America.

      Good traveling.

Nope, I have never heard of Whiting ME. But if I ever end up wandering through it, I will say, “Hey, Mike is from this place . . .” haha.

      Thanks,
