To purchase or not purchase a guidebook is oftentimes a decision that I have debated on numerous occasions. For the time being, I feel as if I have talked out the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing a guidebook – go to, PDF Future of Travel Guidbooks, Travel Guidebooks to use or not – so it is impertinent to go into it here. But for traveling this next jaunt through the Middle East, I would like to have as much information at my disposal as possible.
So I downloaded the Syria and Jordan chapters of the Lonely Planet Middle East guidebook. These chapters, along with a cheap Modern Standard Arabic chapter, cost a little less than 10 USD. For this amount of money, I have the right to download the chapters up to five times each.
This is not too bad.

The pdf chapters available for download are the same as in the books. By downloading and printing out the pdf files I do not need to purchase and carry around the components of the guidebook that I will not use. I can also throw away the indidual chapters as I use them, and if I ever need them again I can just consult the files on my laptop or redownload them from the Lonely Planet website.
By chapter PDF guidebook downloads makes travel guides far more practical. By printing out the PDF files, I am able to carry around the pertinent pages in my pocket as I walk around unfamiliar cities. If I ever want a map, I can just consult the paper printout without needing to dig out and search through an entire book.
For $2- $7 a chapter you can download Lonely Planet guides.
If the information in the books happen to be crap, you can always just throw away the printouts or delete the files without having spent a large amount of money.
PDF downloads are the future of travel guides.
