Understand the weather

Everybody knows that it is hot in Dubai. Not many people understand how hot and how to deal with constant heat. This is going to be something that has to be dealt with in a very specific way. Understand the culture

As a Middle Eastern country that is predominantly Islamic, the culture is quite a bit conservative. Although there are a lot of Western expats there, you will still be expected to follow the local social and cultural norms. 

For instance, you’ll want to dress conservatively outside the house. This is especially true for women. Although headscarves are not required, you will be expected to dress without showing too much flesh as a woman. Men will likely be expected to wear pants and avoid going out in a t-shirt.

There are loads of beaches where it is a bit more relaxed so you can wear a bathing suit, but nude or topless sunbathing is strictly forbidden and can land you in a lot of trouble.

Alcohol is usually forbidden in Islamic countries, but this is more relaxed in Dubai. However, you will need an alcohol license to buy wine or beer or whatever spirits you enjoy so you can then drink. There are plenty of bars and restaurants where alcohol is served. Don’t get drunk while you are out as you are expected to moderate yourself.
