Copan, Honduras

I have technically been in Honduras for a little over a week but I really haven’t spent any time in Honduras. The Bay Islands are really their own entity and have a vibe of their own so it was time for me to move onto the mainland and see what this country is really all about. I had briefly toyed with the idea of staying on Utila for at the next month to do more diving and work my way to a Divemaster. Staying in one location and really getting to know a place appeals to me. I’ve found that I like to travel slower than most. Maybe it’s because others are traveling within some time frame and I’m not, or maybe others get bored of a place faster than I do. Whatever the reason, I don’t like to move fast and miss the finer details that make a place worth being in. This isn’t the first time I’ve thought about settling in a place for an extended period of time but the lure of traveling, seeing new places, cultures and meeting new people is a hard alternative to beat. Around the one week mark wanderlust sets in and I’m ready to pack my bags. So, I’m leaving Utila the same way I’ve left so many other locations; early in the morning with a small feeling of remorse.

Although I’ve left Utila I will continue to dive in other locations and keep open the possibility of taking more SCUBA courses. In the short-term I will miss the sounds, sights and sensations of diving.
I will miss the initial feeling of free-fall backwards off of the side of the boat. The cold and sterile taste of compressed air. The gurgle sound of bubbles beneath the water. The swoosh of oxygen releasing from the tank after a dive. The joy of turning my head and seeing a porcupine puffer, spotted eagle ray, sea turtle, green moray eel, angel fish or number of various schools of fish swimming above my head.
I wasn’t exactly sure where else to go in Honduras so I just picked a route south that leads me El Salvador. The first area of any consequence along the southern road I chose on the map is Copan. There are some Mayan ruins just outside of town so guess what I did today?

The ruins of Copan are my favorite ruins next to Tikal. This is the first site where hieroglyphics, carvings and sculptures play a major role in the site. Copan was my last archaeological site to until Peru and I would rank the four sites that I’ve been to in the following order:
1. Tikal
2. Copan
3. Monte Alban
4. Teotihuacan

Travel Notes: La Ceiba Bus Station to the Utila Ferry
As far as I can tell there is only one way to move from the bus station in La Ceiba to the port to take the ferry to Utila and that’s an overpriced taxi ride. I’ve asked several locals the price and they all tell me that the ride will be 40 Lemps per person. I find it absurd that I can take a four hour bus ride for 90 Lemps but a 10 minute taxi ride is almost half that price. If any traveler knows of a cheaper way to get from the bus station to the port or vice-verse I’m all ears. I would think that there is a local bus that makes this trip but I didn’t see any.

Is the archaeological site ratings just to make me jealous?
