This past month promotional activities for Ghost Cities of China continued. While I only had one speaking engagement — a lecture for Israeli grad students in Shanghai — I was kept busy with interviews about urbanization in China, ghost cities, China’s Western replica towns, and the New Silk Road (the topic of my next book). We also had a few big and much anticipated reviews published.
The Guardian
“Wade Shepard has written a crash course in how Chinese capitalism actually works.” -The Guardian
This is the review of Ghost Cities of China in the Guardian. It was written by the incredible Owen Hatherley, the author of Militant Modernism, whom I recently gave a talk with in London.

In a review entitled Disappearing Villages, The Losers in China’s Breakneck Urbanization, Isabel Hilton, the founder of ChinaDialogue.net, reviewed both Ghost Cities and Michael Meyer’s In Manchuria.

To put it simply, this was an amazing review. Called Big Trouble in Big China: Ghost Cities of China Reviewed, Stephen Lee Naish, author of U.ESS.AY, dives deep into some of the main themes of Ghost Cities.
