Portugal came up again and again in my travel research — and, eventually, I booked a one-way ticket.

I never really planned to leave California. But between the rising costs, the daily rush, and the constant noise, I started to wonder what else was out there. Portugal came up again and again in my research — and, eventually, I booked a one-way ticket.
Why Portugal?
Simple: it made sense. Rent is cheaper, the vibe is slower, and it still has modern comforts. Unlike a lot of places, Portugal welcomes newcomers — and it doesn’t take a fortune to live well.
The Algarve especially stood out. It has beaches, international communities, and a laid-back lifestyle that reminded me of old-school coastal California — minus the six-figure mortgages.
Settling into the Algarve
I rented a place in Lagos, an area which combines surf culture with a historic old town. I started with short-term accommodation, and having a good Algarve holiday rental company in Lagos made all the difference. They helped arrange everything, including my transfer from the airport, so I could just focus on getting a feel for the area.
Whether you’re staying short-term or long-term, there’s no shortage of Algarve rental properties in towns like Lagos, Alvor, or Ferragudo.
Eventually, I Bought
After about a year, I decided to put down roots. I worked with a real estate agency in Lagos that understood both the market and the quirks of buying as a foreigner. It wasn’t totally smooth (no move is), but I never felt lost in the process.
There are still great opportunities if you’re looking for properties in Algarve, Portugal, whether you’re thinking of investment, retirement, or just a lifestyle change.
What Life Is Really Like
There’s no fairytale ending here. It’s still real life. But it’s a better version of it.
- I walk more and drive less.
- I shop at local markets instead of battling traffic.
- I have time for coffee, not just caffeine.
- And I don’t need to earn six figures to feel secure.
Portugal — and the Algarve in particular — gave me room to breathe. And I think a lot of Americans are just looking for the same thing.
