FAQ about travel visas to Denmark

Does a fine for overstaying mean that I am banned from the Schengen region

I overstayed in Copenhagen after the rules for americans changed…3 months in 6 months out and I had to sign something at the Finish airport in Finish. Anyway, they fined me 60 euros but i have no idea where to send it and i would like to get back to CPH in August. What can I do?

It is my impression that if you were processed for the overstay and paperwork was filed on you, then you are more than likely in the SIS (the Schengen zone’s immigration system) and can be denied entry to Schengen Europe at any time — even if the immigration officials in Finland did not mention anything of it. Typically, if this happens the ban is generally around 3 years, but this is often loosely enforced. In point, you may be able to reenter Schengen Europe before the possible ban is up, but there will always be the possibility that you can be refused entry. The system is very inconsistent, and the bans seem to be enforced only at the whim of the individual immigration official. If you want to check to see if you are in the SIS wait for at least three months (it apparently takes time to be entered) and inquire at a Danish Consulate.

    Hi

I’m an au pair in Denmark right now. And the plan for now is going back home for vacation for a month(Thailand). The thing is my host family just cancelled the contract just a few days ago. And I just found out that my name has been registered in SIS system due to overstaying the visa in Norway for 2 months. The punishment is 2-year period. I’m not sure when it starts the punishment tho. I got out of Norway some time around mid february 2010. And got the letter from the UDI stamped 15 April 2010 informing that I’m banned from entering the schengen area. The letter arrived to Danish embassy in bkk on 30 April tho. And I got it sent to Denmark a month later. I should mention that I got the Danish visa in April and got to Denmark on 7 May 2010. So what am I wondering now is that will I get the problem if I go back home and try to re enter Denmark?

I’ve read the rule that I could actually make a request to delete my name from SIS system if I have visa. What do you think? What would be your suggestion?

      Hello Oannie,

Thanks for the donation! I believe that I sent an email to your other address as to where I answered your question. I just re-read this email and have some things to add to my response. First of all, you are lucky that the date that you received your visa before the day that the letter of you being banned from the Schengen zone arrived at the Danish embassy in Thailand. Speaking honestly, I would not risk leaving Denmark or the Schengen zone before your visa is expired and you are ready to go home. It is a safer bet this way that you will be able to complete your work in Denmark, as there is a chance that you would be denied entry if you left and tried to return.

    Hello,

I applied for a short-term visa for Denmark and got the visa accepted from the 15th of Sep 2012 till the 29th of Sep 2012 which was issued in Egypt. I hold an Egyptian passport number.
I arrived in Copenhagen airport on the 15th Sep 2012. Stayed the whole visa duration in Copenhagen, then departed from Copenhagen airport on the 29th Sep 2012 around 19:55, landed in Zurich airport (transit) 29th Sep 2012 around 21:40 to wait for 12hr 5min layover to get on the other plane to Egypt which departed on the 30th Sep 2012 around 9:45. The problem is I didn’t check out when I was in Zurich airport before midnight. I checked out on the 30th Sep 2012. The police officer told me that I have to pay a fine and sign a declaration. So I paid the fine [ 350 CHF ] and signed the declaration and mentioned that I was in the airport but didn’t check out before midnight because I totally forgot but I was in the airport. I asked the police officer if this will cause me any problems if I apply again and he said that if it’s only one day then it will not cause you problems but be careful next time. Do you think i will have any problems if i applied again to denmark?

    Warm regards,
    Sam
