Look in Garbage Bag Travel Tip
Travel tip #39

Humans have the uncanny ability to not remember what it is that they forget. This is the hallmark of forgetting. The ability to forget is a blessing, for if we did not possess this ability, we would probably all be basket cases. So look through a garbage bag before you throw it away, as you never know what else may be in there.

This is a simple rule for travel.

I often use plastic grocery bags to store garbage in when in hotels that do not have garbage cans. It is amazing how many hotel rooms on this planet do not come equipped with places to dispose of garbage – I have no idea why this is. When in such a room, I usually designate a used grocery bag for my garbage. I think everybody does this.

The only problem with this comes from the fact that the bag was once used for transporting other things – things that I want. Sometimes it happens that a bag that I choose for garbage ends up having things that I want inside of it. If I am not careful, I could end up throwing wanted travel gear out with the trash.

This travel tip is simple: look through plastic shopping bags before you throw them away.

I do not know how many times I have thrown things that I wanted away because I forgot that they were located in plastic bags that were otherwise full of garbage.

Travel tips come out of travel mistakes. My prized Star vegetable peeler was thrown away the other day. It was sitting in a plastic grocery bag that was otherwise full of carrot peels. It looked like garbage, and it was thrown out with the garbage.

It was not until a full day later that I realized that one of my prized pieces of travel gear was gone for good.

Look through shopping bags of garbage before throwing them away. Memory is designed to not be trusted.

Look through grocery bags before throwing away. Something that I want could have – somehow – ended up in here. I have no idea how these things happen, but they do.

As always, take this tip and use it for life, or snicker at my fool advice.

Walk Slow,

Wade
