Cheaper Transport from JFK Airport to New York City

Introduction

This is a travel tip to get from almost anywhere in New York City to JFK airport for no more than $4.

How to get from JFK to New York City Cheaply

I always find myself annoyed when being nickled and dimed for petty services while traveling. The $5 fee to get from the Howard Beach or Jamaica subway stations to JFK airport via the Airtrain has always severely annoyed me. One time, I tried to walk from Howard Beach to the airport – it did not work – and every time I go in or out of the USA through JFK I mutter to myself about wasting $5 to travel a very short distance.

But I have now found a way to beat this little Airtrain gimmick, and I found it by accident:

I was riding the A subway train towards the JFK airport when I realized that I was on the fork that went to Lefferts Blvd instead. When I got off of the train I saw a sign for a bus that went from the station to JFK. The bus was the Q10 and I got on it and rode to the airport while saving a little money. I also found that it is easy to access the Q10 train from JFK’s terminal four to get back to the city. Though I suggest telling the bus driver to let you know when you get to Lefferts Blvd if you are not familiar with the area.

Maximum cost for the journey:

$4 if you do not have an all-day transport metro card. If you do have a metro card then the subway to bus connection will not cost any extra money.

Money saved:

$5 if you have an all-day, monthly, weekly metro card for MTA public transport. $3 if you have to buy a new ticket for each ride on the bus or subway.
