My family is a bunch of jokesters. “So you now have 99 Vagabond Journey shirts!” they laugh at me as we sit around the dinner table on a snowy New York night. They think that it is funny that I am the proud possessor of no less than 99 of the same t-shirt in various sizes.

“Hey!” my father roared in a sea of laughter, “you can tie all of them together end to end, tie them to a couple of trees, and make a giant sling shot!”

They don’t believe that anyone wants to buy my stinking t-shirts so they continue offering suggestions on how I can find additional functions for the 99 identical t-shirts that I now claim ownership of.

“He only sold one, he only sold one!” they laugh, my loving wife, Chaya, leading the chorus.

“I will sell every one of them,” I speak stubbornly.

They laugh.

Due to a slight lack of sales, I have now lowered the price of the donation for the Vagabond Journey.com fund raiser t-shirts.

Vagabond Journey T-shirt description

Vagabond Journey t-shirt

The Vagabond Journey t-shirt design features a writing quill super imposed over a compass. It was based off of the little logo at the top of most pages on this website, and, I suppose, indicates travel and writing. I suppose this is what this site is about.

Justin Catania, my friend who printed the t-shirts, is a woodblock printer based in New York City. I met him while I was chasing Chaya’s tail. They were roommates. In the process of the courtship, we became good friends, and we partnered up on Vagabond Journey — he does the art and I write the words.

The following is a photo sequence of how the Vagabond Journey t-shirts were printed.

Fist a design is drawn onto a piece of wood or linolium and then it is carved out to make a woodblock print

First a design is sketched upon a block of wood or, in this case, a piece of linoleum. Then the negative space is carved out by hand and a “woodblock” is created to do the prints with.

The print is then applied with ink and it is laid upon the shirt.

Next, the print and the shirt are run through a woodblock printing press.

The freshly printed t-shirts are now hung up to dry.
