Stay in touch even when you’re on the other side of the world.

My perception of distance has been greatly altered since embarking on this long-term travel adventure. After departing with a single backpack and rather vague travel plans, I would consider myself a traveling nomad. My days are spent traveling from country to country and trying to get to grips with local ways of life, including how to use local public transport systems.
However, as I travel around the world, I am always reminded of my home in South Asia and the personal and family ties that I have there. For many travelers, this would also be the case, and as such, they are required to balance their time exploring local cities and cultures with the various responsibilities that they have back home.
I have to manage many everyday tasks for my family in India while I am traveling the world. Sometimes this can be as simple as calling a phone company to sort out a problem, while I am sitting in a cafe in Europe. At other times it can be more complicated, such as trying to sort out a problem with a company that deals with my family’s finances, while I am in a noisy hostel common room in Asia, trying to sort out problems with my family.
I suppose until now I hadn’t realized just how heavy a phone could be until I sat in a noisy hostel common room somewhere trying to sort out a family crisis.
A traveler asked today, ‘Have you ever tried to sort out a family crisis from a hostel common room halfway around the world?’ I said, ‘Yes.’
It forces you to grow up quickly.
The Rhythm of Life on the Move
Later that night, back in your own room, whether it is a hostel or a house, you are still working on your laptop. This time it is midnight and the only light in the room is the glow from your screen. A desk lamp maybe, but it is enough to see by. The hum of your laptop is the only sound in the room, and you are typing away, trying to solve all the problems that have arisen during the day.
There are many family milestones, financial commitments, and routine household expenses that need to be dealt with while you are traveling abroad. These can include supporting family members and continuing personal projects back home. This can involve a lot of work, such as arranging for someone to check on relatives and deal with correspondence. All of this has to be dealt with as quickly as possible, while you are traveling abroad and enjoying your time in a new place.
When you are a nomad, you may need to send money to India in a hurry. India is home to your family and the projects you are working on, and when something important happens, you want to be able to support them immediately. This is possible with digital money transfer services, such as OFX. They offer fast, transparent, and secure services that can be managed from the comfort of your own accommodation, such as a guesthouse or hostel.
And that’s the point. You want your support to feel immediate, even when you are half a world away.
Overcoming the Distance with Digital Tools
Nowadays, with advancements in technology, a nomad can easily manage his responsibilities while on the move. There are numerous remote tools and platforms that a traveler can use to manage his financial matters from anywhere in the world.
These platforms have made it easy for a traveler to transfer funds to any part of the world. They charge a nominal fee for their services and also offer other benefits like easy transaction tracking, real-time updates, etc. All these services can be availed with just a few clicks on a laptop or a mobile phone.
Once you can easily transfer funds from your mobile to a recipient’s account, distance ceases to impede performing duties and fulfilling obligations, both of which now bring you peace and let you continue traveling. At the same time, you stay on top of matters at home and work to ensure that they are dealt with in a timely and satisfactory manner.
And that balance makes all the difference.
Moreover, there are many day-to-day logistics that one needs to manage. This includes maintaining a schedule for the various tasks one needs to complete for their families and managing various household accounts. This also involves keeping up to date with various developments that are taking place in India. So, as a nomad, one needs to be very proactive in managing the various daily affairs that one has.
Keeping Cultural and Emotional Ties Alive
Travel is about culture. So much of what there is to appreciate when one travels about the world is the customs of various countries. The way the various communities of the world interact with each other, the way various communities of the world celebrate, support each other, etc.
A man who has traveled about the world has a different perspective than a man who hasn’t. He can appreciate Indian culture so much more. He can support his family back in India so much more.
Many travelers who travel to India for long periods of time seek out everyday comforts of home. In fact, many long-term travelers go to great lengths to replicate their lives from back home in the country or countries they are traveling through.
They can be found in cafes and restaurants all over the world that serve food from their home country. In many cities around the world, there are Bollywood cinemas that show the latest films from India and clubs that play traditional Indian music. Many travelers also keep in regular contact with family and friends back home. They will often support relatives and get involved with local community initiatives in India.
How do we carry home with us when home is thousands of miles away?
The way you experience new cultures on the road and observe how communities interact and support each other influences your connection to home. This further solidifies your appreciation for the values of a community that is close to your heart, and you feel reassured by the knowledge that even though you are thousands of miles away from home, your presence is felt there.
It is not a heavy burden to carry home with you, even when you are thousands of miles away.
Navigating the Challenges of Remote Responsibilities
Additionally, even with the best preparation, occasional connection problems can arise, and unexpected tasks need to be dealt with. This can happen in a rural village in the mountains or in a seaside town with frequent power cuts.
Online support can be easily arranged. Many remote workers and online freelancers rely on video conferencing to manage affairs and overcome the distance with Digital Tools.
But preparation only gets you so far.
Communication with family is another key thing to note for nomads traveling abroad, to set proper expectations, manage the family’s expectations, and establish trust. The need for communication and the fear of not being able to reach family or to be reached in an emergency is a fear that most travelers have. The key is to establish routines, communicate, and set proper boundaries and expectations to ensure that loved ones are taken care of.
But sometimes you have to pause, take a breath, and acknowledge that yes, you are living on the other side of the world.
Balancing Practicality and Adventure
In short, make the most of your travels and return safely to India; handle as much as possible efficiently by using the best available online services. In this way, you will be able to have an excellent and enriching experience of your travels.
When you are organized for your journey, you have plenty of energy and time to go through the journey you have planned for yourself.
