Best Places to Stay in Malta: Accommodation Guide

When traveling to Malta you’re going to need a place to stay. Here’s some incredible options for any budget.

According to the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the Mediterranean islands of Malta receive 2.6 million tourists per year. This is really no surprise. Malta is a wonderful location and is blessed with great weather in the summer months. It has a rich and diverse history that entwines with world history, and it has a proud, welcoming people.

You may well be considering visiting the country or indeed returning to it. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the top hotels in Malta, together with other accommodation options that will help you plan your trip.

Luxury Hotels

If you want your hotel to have everything, here are luxury hotel suggestions. These hotels tend to be lavish and have the extravagant, tasteful touches that other hotels don’t offer.

Casa Rocca Piccola

Located in the UNESCO protected Valletta, this hotel was once the home of one of Malta’s most important families in the 16th century. The hotel is small offering only five suites, but this exclusiveness brings with it a certain sophistication most hotels can’t match.

The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux

The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux is a converted 17th-century palazzo located in Mdina. It is a truly elegant affair featuring a covered central courtyard which in turn is home to a lounge and bar. The top floor hosts a fine dining restaurant. Many that come here enjoy being part of the silent city when the tourist crowds have gone.

The Palace

You’ll find The Palace hotel in the upmarket district of Sliema. The style of this five-star hotel is contemporary and is perfect if you want luxury as the heart of the action in Malta. A stay here places you within in minutes of shops, restaurants, boat trips, and rock swimming. The boutique-style gives it more distinction than most.

Guest House Hotels

Malta has plenty of good mid-range hotels, and these offer a good quality of hotel at a reasonable price. They are also plentiful, so no matter if you want to stay in the capital Valletta, or a smaller town in Gozo, you should be able to find the right accommodation for you. Here are some suggestions.

The Stonehouse

The Stonehouse is located in the popular district of St. Julian’s. This is just north of Valletta and close to many of the better, more lively nightspots of Malta. The hotel is rated three stars although arguably thanks to the rustic décor and views, it is a cut above average for this range.

Five Trees Guest House

Located in Sliema, the guest house has a funky artistic feel. The bright colors involved, however, are not garish but tastefully applied, and the hotel has a welcoming vibe. It is ideally located in the heart of the action of Malta.

Green Grove Guesthouse

The family run Green Grove Guesthouse is minutes away from Paceville, St Julian’s, where the best nightlife in the country can be found. It has its own bar and restaurant making it ideal if you get back late and want some refreshment. It offers airport transfers, guides, and all the amenities you would expect in its spacious rooms.

Budget Hotels

Despite the name budget, Malta has plenty of hotels that offer good value for money. These can be found across Malta and are ideal if you are on a tight budget. Here is a choice selection.

Porto del Sol

Located in Xemxija, Porto del Sol offers good accommodation at an affordable price. It is ideally placed to give you access to a part of Malta that is close to the coast and attractions. Features include a bar and great views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Carlton Hotel Malta

Located in Sliema, the Carlton Hotel offers plenty of bang for your buck. It is located on the coastal side of Sliema and as such offers great views, and the beach is highly accessible, making it perfect for families.

There are plenty of services here to make your stay comfortable.

Other accommodation options in Malta

As well as hotels and depending on your group and circumstances, you may prefer one of the following accommodation options.

Villas

Malta has plenty of villas which can be more suited if you have a large party and want to stay as a group and socialize. Most villas come with their own selling points such as a private pool.

Golden Bay

Self-Catering Apartments

As well as hotels and villas, you may want to consider self-catering apartments. These are great if you want a home from home feel. As you will be preparing food, you may find that you save money on what you spend on meals which makes them a great budget option.

Also, if you have special dietary requirements, self-catering is arguably the best option for you.

Hostels

Malta does possess hostels, and these allow you to see the island at the lowest price. Great for backpackers.
