A Guide to Keeping Entertained Whilst Solo Traveling the UK

Traveling solo is an immensely freeing adventure that has gained popularity over recent years, including across the UK itself.

Traveling solo is an immensely freeing adventure that has gained popularity over recent years, including across the UK itself. It gives you the opportunity to explore places at your own pace, whether that’s wandering through cities or seeing what the countryside has to offer. However, with the amount of time spent on your own, it’s good to keep in mind a few ways you can keep yourself entertained during your travels.

Digital Downtime on the Go

When you’re on the move or simply waiting to get going, your smartphone can be your best friend. It’s the ideal time to start editing your travel photos or unwinding with a good audiobook, helping you to fill that downtime productively.

Podcasts are a great alternative too, with true crime series or comedy shows helping you to absorb some socialising by proxy with hosts you enjoy listening to. It can also be a good time to send out a few messages too, letting family and friends know you’re doing okay and checking in with your next plans so people are aware of where you’ll be headed next.

Light Gaming & Social Play

While it can be easy to fall into the trap of endlessly scrolling social media, there are more constructive ways you can find some escapism on your phone. Mobile games offer plenty of choices to fill an hour or two with something you find interesting, from brainteasing word puzzles to online bingo games happening in the moment or even fully-fledged RPGs right there on your phone.

If you’d rather keep it in the realm of the real, then it’s worth exploring some of the local events nearby – like pub quizzes or board game nights hosted at retail outlets. These can help you meet new people as you travel and add a little excitement as you get a taste of the local nightlife.

Reading Escapes & Audio Soundtracks

Reading is an incredibly mentally stimulating activity that many of us simply don’t make time for anymore. Your solo adventure can be the perfect time to read up on other literary adventures – or simply disappear into a good story. You can download e-books onto your phone ahead of time, or use an e-reader if you own one.

Solo travel can also make you feel like the main character in your own film, so why not build the perfect playlist to go along with it. You can create different playlists to backdrop your train journey or wanders through winding streets, filled with your favourite artists or more instrumental tracks if you want to leave room for your brain to wander too.

Community & Local Engagement

Although your trip might belong to just you, it doesn’t mean you can’t interact with others. Joining guided tours or looking up group activities can help you dip a toe into socialising whilst enjoying the local culture too.

Pop-up workshops like pottery classes to foraging walks are great options and can be found across the UK. Many hotels and hostels now organise community events specifically designed for solo travelers, recognizing this growing market.

The beauty of solo travel lies in its flexibility, so switch things up as you go and embrace your autonomy by picking a mix of activities that push you a little out of your comfort zone.
