5 Perfect States to Have a Fishing Getaway

Where to go for your next fishing trip.

Fly fishing

The US has some of the best freshwater fishing in the world, as well as some of the most diverse and abundant saltwater fish spots in the world.

There are many different types of fish in the US, including trout, salmon, catfish, bass, and bluegill. These fish are found throughout the country in rivers and lakes. Off the coast, sharks, swordfish, groupers, and tuna are some of the big sought-after fish.

Fishing spots can be found in every state in the United States. However, rather than listing off the hundreds of different options available in every state, below are five great states to visit with a few of their best options.

North Carolina

There is something for everyone when it comes to fishing in North Carolina. The state has many lakes and rivers, and there are many fish species to catch. Among them are largemouth bass, striped bass, trout, catfish, and panfish.

There are more than 15,000 miles of rivers and streams in the state, so there’s no shortage of fishing locations. Among the most popular fishing spots are Lake Norman, Falls Lake, and Kerr Lake.

Alaska

If you decide to visit Alaska, be prepared for the cold. Alaska averages 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7°C), and it drops well below that in the winter. For those who aren’t accustomed to such low temperatures, now may be the time to start acclimating.

Because of its location relative to the earth’s tilt, days can be extremely short, meaning less daylight for fishing. On the flip side, during summer, daylight can last up to 19 hours.

Alaska has a lot of different fish but is most famous for salmon. Millions of salmon leave the ocean each year and travel upstream into the maze of Alaskan rivers. A fisherman can catch hundreds of pounds of salmon in just a few days. There are only a few weeks of the salmon run each year. The best part? All of the salmon runs happen during the summer months when the weather is tolerable and the days are long.

Some of the best places to fish in Alaska include the Kvichak River if fly fishing, Ketchikan if wanting to go deep sea fishing, and Bristol Bay if you’re wanting to hit the salmon run. J&H Tackle conventional fishing reels are highly recommended for these excursions due to their durability and performance in challenging conditions.

South Carolina

Fishing in South Carolina is excellent, with plenty of options available. Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot on the water or an urban scene, you’ll find it here, especially if you’re sea fishing. Below are three of the best options for deep sea fishing in South Carolina.

  • Charleston. This city is home to Folly Beach and James Island, both of which offer plenty of opportunities for fishing and crabbing on the coast.
  • Edisto Beach. This area is known as one of the best spots in SC for striped bass fishing. The area also has plenty of other types of fish available too.
  • Sullivan’s Island. Another great place where striped bass can be found during their spring migration from March through June every year.

If you prefer river or freshwater fishing, Lake Wateree and the Pee Dee River offer great fishing spots for beginners.

California

Lake Tahoe, the Klamath River, and the Sacramento River are the best fishing spots in California. Lake Tahoe is located between Nevada and California. This beautiful lake has an average depth of 534 feet, making it one of the deepest lakes in North America. The lake is actually only known to have four kinds of fish: rainbow trout, german browns, lake trout, and kokanee salmon.

The Klamath River is located in Northern California and is the second-largest river in the state. It’s a popular place for fishing because of its size and variety of fish species. The river is most known for steelhead fish, trout, and salmon.

Finally, the Sacramento River is located in Northern California and is most known for green and white sturgeon, and lampreys. All of these species are not very common in the US, making the Sacramento River a popular fishing destination.

Oregon

Oregon is a great place for fly fishing. Whether you’re looking for rivers, lakes, or streams, Oregon has a wide range of options. One of the most popular fishing spots in the state is the McKenzie River. This river offers year-round trout fishing with easy access and warm water temperatures.

Other popular places include the Deschutes River and the Clackamas River. Many of these areas are also home to salmon runs that occur during certain seasons of the year—making them even more appealing to anglers who want to try their luck at catching something big.

Be Sure to Have the Right Gear

A fishing rod will suffice if fishing along a riverbank for trout or salmon, but if fishing deep sea, chances are you’ll also need a boat and plenty of heavy-duty gear.

To be successful, you’ll need a fishing license and the right equipment. Boats and bait are available at most locations, but you’ll likely want to bring your own rods and reels. It may also be a good idea to bring a tackle box with lures or flies if you are fishing for non-game species.

Knowing the rules is important if fishing in an area with a lot of boats, or if just fishing alone along a bank. Some lakes or rivers have catch-and-release policies, while others allow only one fish per person. It’s also important to check local regulations if there are size limits or other restrictions on certain species of fish.

When heading out on a boat, make sure to have plenty of water and snacks with you. Even if you plan on eating at the dock or landing where the boat is, it’s still a good idea to bring some food in case the trip takes longer than expected. If you’re going to be fishing for more than one day, make sure that the boat has enough gas and oil so that you don’t have any unexpected expenses.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this article has given you some ideas about where to go fishing in the United States. Make sure that you choose a fishing spot and location that fits your needs because there are many different kinds. You may want something with a lot of fish, or maybe you prefer a challenge to find the kind of fish that your friends will have to see pictures of to believe. Whatever it is, there’s bound to be something out there for everyone!
