Global Economy and Speculation

Global Economy and Speculation

On the premise that stocks are not real, money is not tangible, and the ebb and flow of the state of modern humanity is based on the tidings of economic speculation, it seems as if the world is dooming itself through its own prophecies of the future.

In point: if it is thought that the global economy is going to crash, then it will.

Economics is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

To these ends, Andy the Hobotraveler issued the following request to news media around the world:

I am Asking a Favor of News Media

I would like to ask a favor of the News Media of the World, whether it is Television, Newspapers, Radio, Bloggers, or any other of mass information broadcasting system. We must as a world and nation stop using words that scare the public; this is causing a panic and making this financial situation worst.

I could have used the word “Crisis,” however, it is not a crisis, it is a difficult situation, however if the New Media continues to use these types of words it will become a crisis.

The whole world is ok, the world is good, all is great, however restraint is needed.

We shall reap what we sow, please do not encourage confusion or search for blame, please do not cause people to argue. Now is the time for sound minds to raise their voice and help, it is the time when the leaders should lead by example.

The use of sensationalistic and doomsday words need to be avoided for the good of the world. To use these words is a form of greed, think about it, becuase it is greedy to feel you need to be the first to tell information. This lack of responsibility for our actions is what has caused this situation, always the words,

“It is someone else’s responsibility, not mine.”

What did John F. Kennedy say,
“And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.“

I would appreciate if you would emails this, or tell this to anyone you know in the News Media and try to convince them to lower the level of their reports to a moderate level for the good of the world.

Wade, is it really wise to ask people to put their head in the sand? What if the perfect economic storm is forming? We've never seen a housing collapse the likes of this one, is a depression possible? likely? Should people be making preparations? If the plane I'm on is crashing into the ocean, I don't want people saying things are fine. I want instruction on what needs to be done to survive the crash. There's a serious problem here (house prices, bank failures, credit frozen, market collapse, global recession, commodity crunch, election cycle, deregulation, etc.); pretending there isn't won't make this go away.

Yeah, I think it is wise. News is base on making money. The more people watch and read their media the more money they can make. The more people are scared the more they will watch. The more they watch the more they think that the economy is crashing. They more they think the economy is crashing the more money they will not invest, spend, and put into the economy. The less money that is invested the more likely the chance of economic collaspe.

The issues is bigger than this, I know. But I know the news media and their ways of directing self-fulfiling prophecies. You can be scared if you want. I rather put my head in the sand.

Wade, as hamlet said "nothing is either good nor bad; but it is thinking that makes it so." My point is not that people need to be paralyzed by fear, rather they ought to honestly survey the situation and react accordingly. We really do have more options than to either be frightened or to stick our heads in the sand.

Yes, you are correct. It is just difficult to accurately survey the situation because of the alterior motives of the corporate news.

But you are correct in proposing that people should find out what is going on.

This economic crisis has signs of not looking too good . .. . but it has been coming for many years.

Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate them.

Wade, sorry it has taken so long to respond. But if you are looking for unbiased reports on the economy, read the economic reports published by major lenders. Economists are much like weathermen. They try to make predictions about a complex future. As such they often miss the mark. But they are the best source of info about the economy we have. I too distrust a lot of the media. Attention deficit disorder has ruined quality reporting in this country. Finally, yes this has been building for many years. The loose monetary policy of the fed under Greenspan is really what set this beast into motion.
