I’m a 51 yo Australian woman who travelled for just short of a month in New Zealand riding the east coast of the North Island on a bicycle. Including the airfare, two budget hotel rooms, food and insurance (cheap and minimal) I spent about one Australian dollar per kilometre riding 1400 kms. That worked out at about $55 per day, and i doubt I could have done it cheaper than that without starving to death or finding myself sleeping rough under bridges. NZ is not friendly towards free campers with good reason, and I was respectful of Maori custodianship of the landscape. I camped in a tent mostly and in a couple of places where that wasnt possible or it was raining too hard to be comfortable I holed up in a hostel or hotel sharing a room with another traveller to cut costs. That was a sociable break from the long distance solitude too. I ate as much as possible from where ever I could get it for free – weeds for greens ( you have to know what is edible to do this), wild fruit off trees frowing by the side of the road, gifts from strangers who wanted to help, hostel share boxes or eating with others and contributing what I could. I only ate a restarant meal once. Plenty of times I had to be hungry until I could get food, especially in remote areas where it could be days before I found a supermarket to stock up supplies. I have particular dietar needs due to allergies so finding constant, adequate quantities of the right food was a quite a challenge. Compare this adventure with one I had taken my two children on for two weeks around the South Island a few years previously, that cost around $4500 total, inclusive of a hire van for the two weeks and one luxury night at a hotel to give ourselves a treat. That worked out at around $100 per day per person. The hire van was the expensive part of that because I was diddled $900 by an unscrupulous hire company who charged me for extra insurance because I didnt have a credit card!!! We bought all our food at the outset for $300 and only had to stock up on fresh vegies. We brought a lot of teabags home rather than waste the ones we didnt use. We saw everything we wanted to see and did everything we could afford and had a lovely trip despite the tight budget.
