Hostels and hotels can be quite expensive in Australia. A single bed can be anywhere from AUD$20-35 per night. If you’re going to be staying in a town or city for any length of time, it might be a good idea to inquire into hostel work; making beds or working as a receptionist can often get you free lodging at youth hostels.
Couchsufing is popular in Australia. It‘s free, and a great way to meet people who live in the country. Woofing or other work-exchange programs are also great ideas for budget travelers who have time and would like to get to know a region better.
