There are a number of cheap hostels in Amman and Wadi Musa, right outside Petra. Travelers should take recommendations from trusted sources and walk around the city themselves to try to find cheap places to stay. It is not uncommon that a seemingly helpful person on the street will direct you to a hotel in order to get a commission, or that a hotel owner will lie and tell you that another hotel is closed to get you to stay with them.

No matter where you stay, be sure to bargain, firmly but politely. If you stay in one hotel for longer than a few days you can usually get a discount.

The cheapest places to stay during the summer are mattresses on roofs of hostels. These are even cheaper than dorm rooms. Just be sure to check out your fellow roof sleepers, it won’t end up being cheaper if you get all your stuff stolen.

In Amman we stayed at the Cliff Hostel which was friendly, cheap and had a good location.

In Wadi Musa we stayed at the Valentine Inn, quite popular with budget travelers, but nothing to brag about.

I stayed at the cleopetra hotel in wadi-musa. It was acceptably priced (with a lot of bargaining) but the owner is a shmuck, who kciked us out the last night because he found someone who would pay more.
